This week marks the start of our Mid-Term unit of the Art & Society course, and also the start of our weekly series of talks at the Siena Art Institute, stARTers: assaggi d’arte.” Our first presenter was Dennis McFarland, American writer and February Resident at the Siena Art Institute, presenting his recent short story “Handsome Boy” and discussing the representational, imagistic, and dramatic nature of fiction and the impulse to make art out of experience.

Dennis McFarland is the bestselling author of seven novels: Nostalgia, Letter from Point Clear, Prince Edward, Singing Boy, A Face at the Window, School for the Blind, and The Music Room. His short fiction has appeared in The American Scholar, The New Yorker, Prize Stories: The O’Henry Awards, Best American Short Stories, and elsewhere. He has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and from Stanford University, where he has also taught creative writing. His novel Nostalgia won the Michael Shaara Prize for Excellence in Civil Ward Fiction. He lives in rural Vermont with his wife, writer and poet, Michelle Blake.
